Seediq is the 14th recognized tribe of Taiwanese indigenous. Members of the tribe mainly reside in Renai Township of Nantou County, encompassing the Zhong-yuan Tribe in the south and the Jing-guan Tribe in the north. Their spoken language is composed of three major language groups: Toda, Tgtaya, and Truku.
The music in this recording is taken from the album “Legend at the Foothills of White Rock Mountain” released by the Taiwanese Music Institute and recorded before Seediq Traditional Arts Troupe was formed. To pass on this precious cultural legacy of the Seediq Tribe, Nantou County Government announced its intention to register the Seediq song, “uyas kmeki” sung at religious festivals as a form of traditional art, and to register Seediq Traditional Arts Troupe as an artistic preservation group. With Seediq Traditional Arts Troupe as the major performance group, the county government designated Obin Nawi, a Seediq elder, to lead the members of the coming generation to sing the ancient folk songs passed on by their ancestors, so a teaching and learning project could be conducted. The group held a traveling show to pass on the spirit and mission of the tribe to the coming generation.
