Yung Shing Le Shadow Puppet Theatre Troupe, established by Mr. Zhang Li in Mi-tuo Village, Kaohsiung Province, did not have a name to begin with, so it took on the name of its birth place. Later, Zhang Wan, son of Zhang Li, focused on drama, thus giving it the name “Yung Shing Le Shadow Puppet Theatre Troupe.” Zhang Wan then passed on his skills to his sons, Zhang Zuo and Zhang Suei. Zhang Zuo was in charge of the offstage musical accompaniment of gongs and drums, while Zhang Suei performed on stage. With such coordinated efforts, they performed in many villages and towns and won praise from their audiences. To improve his skills of handling shadow puppets, Zhang Suei performed with different shadow puppet groups for more than 10 years and learned the different features of these groups. Presently, Zhang Xin-guo, son of Zhang Suei, and Zhang Ying-jiao, daughter of Zhang Suei, continue to perform shadow puppet shows and promote the art of shadow puppetry.
