Folk formations occupy an important position in Taiwanese life and culture. Zi-Zhu Temple, a temple with a long history in Southern Taiwan, is a local religious center. Whenever the temple celebrates the birthday of a particular deity, the whole town participates and a parade makes its way throughout the town. More than 50 groups take part in the traditional folk art of Zhen-tou parade formations, and the “village formation” formed by the townspeople is a unique feature of the fair. Scholars praise Zi-Zhu Temple as “an important site of folk art.” Starting from 2001, Song Jiang Formation has been the most important formation of the temple fairs. Song Jiang Formation was originally a military formation which had the function of “stabilizing the country and resisting foreign aggression”; now the formation is mainly a type of folk performance at temple festivals. The formation is practiced when performers have free time; it symbolizes protection of the townspeople and at temple fairs it is performed to honor and guard the gods.
