Established in 1986 by Wu Xing-guo, the current artistic director, the Contemporary Legend Theatre has focused on combining traditional and modern elements in its theatrical productions. Many Western classics have been adapted to Chinese traditional drama. For example, The Kingdom of Desire, the first opera performed by the troupe, is an adaptation of Macbeth by Shakespeare. It featured the stage arts of both East and West and successfully transformed the audience’s perception of Beijing Opera . More recently, the troupe has continued to produce new operas, such as Medea, King Lear, The Storm, and Waiting for Godot, with all winning critical acclaimed both in Taiwan and abroad. The troupe has been invited to perform at many international festivals in many countries, including Great Britain, France, the U.S., Japan, Australia, Denmark, Italy, and others.
