Sun Rong-hui, son of the famous military sheng (male characters) Sun Gui, established Yi-Shin Taiwanese Opera Troupe in 1989. The troupe’s members are mostly members of his family. Currently, Sun Shi-yong and Sun Shi-pei are the two most important sheng characters. Since their establishment, they have sought to combine the technology of modern theater, cultivate their own playwright, and explore subjects that have rarely been attempted in traditional opera. For example, The Unrestrained SOUL is adapted from Faust, and integrated with eastern Zen and Daoist philosophy. Younger playwrights combined their efforts in composing the play Has Mackie Spoken yet?. It is adapted from Brecht’s Three Penny Opera, a satire on the corrupt intrigues of bureaucrats and businessmen. Their new play, DuanXiu, of 2013, touches on the prohibited subject of homosexuality, intending to present the contemporaneity of Taiwanese Opera.
