Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppet Theater was founded in 1913, and eighty some years later, the present director took over the theatre from his father. The theatre, with excellent acting skills and graceful speeches, is Taiwan’s most popular classical puppet theatre. The Quan-zhou puppets perform to the accompaniment of Beiguan music. The puppetry has taken on many elements from Beijing Opera , including stories, plots, movement, and vocal singing, to enrich its content. In 1989, Mr. Xu Wang, feeling that the refinement of puppet theatre was gradually disappearing, asked his eldest son, Xu Guo-liang to establish the Studio of Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppetry Art to preserve and promote the art of traditional puppetry. Early on, its objective was to preserve traditional puppet theatre; now it focuses on innovation within the traditional framework, so that puppetry art has been able to take on a new life in modern times.
