Professor Hong Wei-zhu from National Central University established Taiwan Kunqu Opera Theatre in 1999. Members of this first professional Kunqu Opera performance troupe are distinguished students from the Kunqu Opera Heritage Preservation Project. From 2004 to 2011, the troupe was one of the theatre groups supported by the Council for Cultural Affairs. The troupe’s members mostly have a background in Beijing Opera, with solid training in choreography and singing. Since 1991, the Council for Cultural Affairs and the National Center for Traditional Arts sponsored a Heritage Preservation Program, inviting master artists from China to give lessons to the troupe members. Many years later, they have accumulated more than fifty plays in their repertoire. They participate in Kunqu Opera performances both in Taiwan and China. They also periodically hold classes to preserve and develop the arts of Kunqu Opera in Taiwan.
