As the oldest existing Beiguan music club in Taiwan, the Li Chuen Yuan is believed to have been founded in 1723, yet relevant research showed that the exact year of its establishment was 1811, about 200 years ago. In honor of Auntie’s Hui-Yu Operation Hall at the Nan Yao Palace in Changhua, the Li Chuen Yuan is also called “Auntie’s Hall”. A Changhua proverb goes “Changhua city goes hand in hand with the Li Chuen Yuan.” On a horizontal inscribed board hung inside the Li Chuen Yuan, “Yue Cheng Chao Wu,” the first couple writes: “In June of 1930, for the centennial celebration of the Li-Chun Music Club in the 16th year of the reign of Chiaching Emperor in the Ching Dynasty,” revealing the long history of the club.
In addition to musical performances at the annual “Nan Yao Palace” Auntie’s Array Li Chuen Yuan also performs at temple festivals, occasionally performs tzu-ti operas (performances by members of the music club) on stage, and plays music at memorial ceremonies for Confucius. During the Japanese occupation period, members of the Li Chuen Yuan also went on pilgrimages to learn the singing and performing styles and techniques of Beijing Opera from the Ho-Ming-Tien Troupe, one of the two most popular Beijing opera troupes in Changhua. In addition, Cantonese music, which was introduced to Taiwan after 1949, is also a source of learning for the Li Chuen Yuan.
