Founded in Kaohsiung in the year 2000, the Chun-Mei Taiwanese Opera Troupe has been renowned for being active in cultivating talent, giving opportunities to beginners, and featuring young and exceptional performers. The troupe normally focuses on firmly implanting its roots into its native land and performing folk dramas at all large annual and seasonal festivals and temple fairs. Performing dramas adapted from the Ancient Classics in the daytime and sensational stories at night, the flamboyant 「Ho-Pei-Zai drama,」 beautiful and handsome performers, splendid and sumptuous costumes, along with innovative and ever-changing lighting and settings on the stage have become the troupe's idiosyncratic style and character. As a troupe which is frequently invited to various places for cultural performances in public or joint performances, the Chun-Mei Taiwanese Opera Troupe enjoys a large fan base and strong support in all of Taiwan's cities and counties.
The formats and themes of Chun-Mei Taiwanese Opera Troupe's productions never become stale but instead reflect the omnipotent and all-encompassing nature of Taiwanese Opera. For example, Switch, inspired by the movie Face Off, Heart Off, addresses doctor-patient issues which were hardly presented in theatrical performances, and A Beautiful Dream of Youth is a modern drama which depicts the entire life of Chang Wei-hsien – a representative figure of Taiwanese drama.
Kuo Chun-mei, the leading performer of xiao-sheng (young male characters) roles in the troupe, had a handsome face, a unique voice, and an irresistible charm. She was accorded the 16th Global Chinese Culture & Arts Award in 2010, and was subsequently shortlisted for the Golden Horse Award for the Best New Actor for his performance in the movie Flying Dragon, Dancing Phoenix.
