This opera classic was recorded by the Liao Chiung-chih Taiwanese Opera Foundation for Culture and Education through the “Project of Recording and Preserving Taiwanese Opera by Liao Chiung-chih”, and commissioned by the National Center for Traditional Arts. Many talented actors took part in the performance. Among them, Liao Chiung-chi, an important figure in the preservation of folk art, plays the leading female role, Wang Bao-chuan; Zhao Mei-ling, a renowned shiao-sheng (a young male character) actor, plays the leading male role, Xue Ping-guei; Chen Sheng-ze, a preserver of invisible cultural resources of Taipei City, plays Wang Yun. In addition, Qiu Yu-ling, Liu Guan-liang, and Liao Yu-qi, all first-year graduates of the Department of Taiwanese Opera of National Taiwan College of the Performing Arts, participated in the performance, an opera which serves as testimony to the importance of preserving and passing on the operatic tradition from the one generation to the next.
During the Reign of Emperor Yizong of Tang Dynasty, Lord Wang Yun gets the permission from the emperor for his third daughter to select a husband through throwing an embroidery ball to the crow. The event is held on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and with the help of Old Man Under the Moon, the god of marriage, Xue Ping-guei, a beggar, catches the embroidery ball. Wang Yun cannot accept that a beggar will become his son-in-law and tries to persuade Xue to give up the marriage with a gift of 200 silver ingots. However, Bao-chuan insists to follow the ordinance and marry Xue, so the father disowns his daughter out of anger. Bao-chuan suffers in poverty after marrying Xue. Soon Xue is drafted to fight in the Western region, and soon he married Princess Dai-zhan of Xi-liang Kingdom and eventually ascends to the throne of the kingdom after the death of the old king. Later, in a year when there is a serious drought, Xue receives Bao-chuan’s letter written in blood. He then crosses three passes and returns to Bao-chuan who has by now lived a poor life in a shanty.
