This play is adapted from the old scripts of The Hidden Mystery of Song Palace. The playwright, Li Ji-wen, endeavored to give new interpretations to the old plays. She Added a section to the original plot of Changelings, in which Bao Zhen and Duke Baxian used the pretext of appreciating lanterns to talk Emperor Zhao Zhen into acknowledging his birth mother. The play also probes into the heart of Zhao Zhen, investigating his complicated thoughts as an emperor and a son, together with the conflicting feelings he experiences after learning that his stepmother is also his enemy. This play features an ending quite different from the grand reunion scene commonly seen in traditional theater. When Consort Li returns to the palace after prolonged hardship to be reunited with her son, the emperor, she perceives the awkward situation of his son. Wearied of harem politics, she decides to leave the palace again to live among the common people, reverting the ending of the story.
The director and leading sheng (male characters) of this play is Tang Mei-yun. Xu Xian-ji played Consort Li in her youth. An advance-aged Consort Li was played by Master Liao Qiong-zhi. Hua-dan ( young and vibrant female characters ) Shi Hui-jun took the challenge of playing Empress Liu. Xiao-mi played the simple, honest and filial Li Yi, bringing a ray of human goodness to the palace conspiracy. Xiaosheng (young male characters) Zhao Mei-ling, who specializes in gulu repertoire, played Chen Lin. Young talent Li Luo-qing played Ko Zhu, demonstrating his skills in creating the play's complicated choreography. Excellent performers from three generations worked together to create this wonderful production.
