Xian-suo, also called diudi() in Hakka Bayin, is usually used in feasting and/or entertainment occasions because its main purpose is to entertain. The organization for Hecheng Hakka Bayin Musical Troupe consists of the theme-leading suona(wind instrument), tixian(bowed string instrument), labaxian(bowed string instrument), pas(bowed string instrument), yangqin(stringed percussion instrument), tonggu(percussion instrument), kozi (percussion instrument), dangding(percussion instrument), and xiangzhan(percussion instrument). The feature of xian-suo music hinges on the leading suona player’s expertise in turning its loud and metallic sound into mellow and flowing rhythms, transforming the entire musical tone at the same time. Even musical or vocal elements integrated from other music or operatic genres can be incorporated into Bayin performance with this technique. That is one important feature of Hakka Bayin music.
A Lass of Sixteen derives from a folk song. The Bayin music integrated and adapted it into an instrumental piece, with suona as the leading instrument, accompanied by strings and percussion.
