This play is one of the representative works of Ming Hwa Yuan. It can accommodate either an indoor or outdoor stage. It won the award of Best Director and Grand Prize of the National Traditional Opera Competition. This is also the play chosen to be on the bill of the troupe’s 80th anniversary tour to Europe.
The story begins with a pair of animal spirits, a thousand-year-old white fox spirit and a peach spirit that was hundreds of years old. Once they transformed themselves into human figures to go to town. Incidentally, they joined a military competition to win the hand of the rich gentleman Ge’s daughter. The White Fox spirit fell in love with Lady Ge and defeated all the other competitors for the right to marry her. The Immortal Lu Dong-bin feared that spirits would do harm to humans, so he sent his disciple, Ge Ling-gun, who was also Lady Ge’s older brother, to demand three betrothal gifts from the White Fox, each being a critical object that would determine his mortality or immortality. However, the White Fox preferred to sacrifice his immortality for a human lover. Moved by this passion, Jigong intended to help the White Fox to accomplish the three demands. Lu Dong-bin, on the contrary, was against it. The two immortals got into a fight. In the play, Jigong utters, “When beasts have feelings, they are even more adorable than human beings. When human beings are without feelings, they can be more hateful than beasts.” The quote indicates the lofty sentiments of precious devout love.
