This play can be called the most classic and the most spectacular representative work of Ming Hwa Yuan since its founding in 1929. It breaks the traditional mirror frame stage boundary, with actors straddling on and off stage, jumping up and down in the air, creating a three-dimensional space that the audience can all participate in. Splendid fantastic stage setting, actual water and fire constitute astonishing effects of sound and vision. In particular, for the Inundating Jinshan Temple scene, up to six fire engines were called on to sprinkle water all over to create a dazzling water-misty scene. A hoisting crane lifted the leading sheng (male characters) Sun Cui-feng, playing the White Snake female role, to 180 meters above ground for a magic duel with the Green Snake. It circulated rapidly among the audience that “this is a one-of-a-life-time experience, absolutely not to be missed.”
This is a play that caters to an open-air stage. Since its debut in 2004, it has been performed at all the important large squares in cities and counties all over Taiwan. The troupe was also invited to perform it at the Hungkou Football Stadium of Shanghai, Huilong Port of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu in China. The numbers of spectators kept setting new records. The legendary record number is one hundred thousand spectators for a single performance.
