MeinongBayin music is mainly performed on occasions devoted to important life rituals and festivities of the Hakka people. Be it weddings, funerals, festivities, or holidays, the Hakka Bayin troupe is on hand to accompany the ritual performances. In particular, the Bayin of southern Taiwan regularly accompanies Hakka life rituals. The Hakka Bayinis are closely knitted with Hakka life and culture.
The Hakka wedding, for example, includes such rituals as Paying Respect for Maternal Grandfather on the eve of the wedding, sacrificial offerings to the Earth God and deities in other temples, and also the Vow Redeeming ritual in the evening, Worshipping the King of Heaven and ancestors. The Bayintroupe is always on hand to help interpret and enrich the entire complex of rituals and practices.
Whenever the Bayin troupes accompany local festivities or life rituals, they perform traditional Hakka Beyin pieces from the dachui, xiansuo, and xiaozidiao categories. There are set rules for each performance and occasion. A Bayin musician not only has to master the music and be an expert instrumentalist, he/she also has to be familiar with the conventions of Hakka folklore in order to coordinate effectively the music with the particular ceremony.
