The xiansuo repertoire of Hakka Ba-yin is led by the suona, and accompanied by the er-xian, hu-xian, and other percussion instruments, in the typical performances of traditional Hakka Ba-yin tunes, Hakka folk songs, and ditties at weddings, festivities and religious rituals. The four-piece set of Ba-yin is also the most common type of orchestration of xiansuo. Xiansuo music aims to inspire appreciation and provide entertainment, unlike the chuichang music, which creates an animated atmosphere. The repertoire therefore is broader. The suona musician makes use of a chuixi technique that mimics opera aria singing to enrich the expressiveness of the music.
The repertoire includes A Sixteen-year-old Lass, Dapu Tune, Plum Upside Down, The Four Jingang, Zhuangyuan Becomes Prime Minister, Auntie Wang, Menglang, the Red Dadiao, When Spring Comes, Broken Iron Bridge, Hualacha, Boxinbo, Three Pounds of Yams, Tianxia Tong, A Nun Leaving the Temple, Huapiao, Fanziqu, Ferry on the First Month, One Stroke Dragon, An Old Tea-Picking Tune, A Goose Calling His Mate, Mountain and River, etc.
The xiansuo version of A Sixteen-year-old Lassis based on a folk song going back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Ba-yin music adapted it into an instrumental piece. In performance, the leading suona player must effectively maneuver both mouth and fingers to transform the loud and metallic sound of the suona into a mellow and rhythmic flow.
