With the trend of westernization making an impact in each corner of the world, a number of ethnic groups are gradually losing their ethnic characteristics. However, some ethnic groups which are in geographically remote areas, or out of religious reasons, still adhere to their traditional customs. For this reason, the Bunun Tribe Association commenced producing documentaries of the Bunun indigenous tribe’s culture. Prior to global civilization, people in different areas developed different cultures and lifestyles in accord with the different environments in which they lived in and exhibited the diverse cultures of human beings. At present, the huge wave of different ethnic minorities being assimilated to Han Chinese has made the previously colorful and diverse culture of Austronesian indigenous grow increasingly one-dimensional, thereby resulting in the loss of ethnic minorities’ unique ethnic characteristics in only a few decades.
Planning, production, and presentation of the Bunun indigenous tribe’s culture centers on recording details of Bunun tribesmen’s daily lives, such as annual and seasonal rituals, hunting and agricultural practices, life skills, as well as traditional skills and crafts. Given the comprehensiveness of the documentaries, rebuilding the vanishing indigenous customs appears possible. Sending out cultural messages through “watching films and talking about the Bunun tribe,” these documentaries enable future generations to learn about the Bunun tribe’s diverse culture, listen to the sound of roots, and appreciate the true meaning of the tribe’s traditional lifestyle and culture.
