San Diego Asian Film Festival - Taiwan Cinema Spotlight
by Brian HU / Artistic Director of Pacific Arts Movement
''Since 2014, Pacific Arts Movement has collaborated with the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego to hold a “Taiwan Cinema Spotlight” to highlight a certain aspect of Taiwan film history. For our 2016 edition, we decided on what we saw as one of the most significant and unique aspects of Taiwanese cinema in the past 25 years: LGBT-themed films, which have had unprecedented and disproportionate success both in the domestic box office and at international film festivals.
Immediately, the Taiwan Cinema Toolkit (TCT) became an essential resource, consolidating much of the work we used to have to do with distributors and film archives. We were thrilled to discover that two of the films we were targeting, Blue Gate Crossing and Boys for Beauty, were available at TCT and that there were new digital prints available for them. TCT became a one-stop resource for the films and for publicity materials, saving us a lot of the legwork. The TCT website also gave us other ideas for this year’s “Taiwan Cinema Spotlight,” and perhaps more excitingly, gave us ideas for future editions as well. Because of how streamlined the process promised to be, as well as how helpful and responsive the TCT staff was, we knew we could count on TCT to ensure the agreements and delivery, which isn’t always the case when programming older films. We wish every country had a similar service.''
