In 1965, director CHEN Yao-Chi made Liu Pi-Chia, Taiwan’s first observational documentary. Its eponymous character was a farmer press-ganged into the KMT forces during the Chinese Civil War, ending up in Taiwan with CHIANG Kai-Shek's government in exile. Along with other ex-soldiers, he diligently cultivated the rock-strewn banks of the Mukua River in eastern Taiwan. Decades later, he is filmed again by director HU Tai-Li, after she coincidentally found him during her anthropological research on retired veterans. She records the daily life of him and his family, portraying the complex ethnic relationships in Taiwan, where many mainland immigrants married native Taiwanese women. The title refers to the stones along the riverbank, which not only constitute the beautiful landscape, but symbolize the resilience and inner beauty of the characters in this film.
