HSU Pu-Liao was born in 1951 into a family of magicians and vaudeville performers. His screen image and performance echoed that of British-born comedian Charlie Chaplin. Throughout his career, he shot over 60 films, working mainly with renowned slapstick director CHU Yen-Ping. After rising to prominence, he received incessant film offers and became the hottest face in show business, making millions of dollars a film. Unfortunately, this king of comedy always had a tint of tragedy to his personal life. A morphine addiction left him vulnerable to local mafia, while he fell victim to exploitation by the industry. In 1985, as his last film was showing in theaters, he passed away at the young age of 34. This documentary traces the rise and fall of this local comedy legend, interviewing his remaining family members and friends.
