Farewell 1999 is an intensely personal and poetic study of the director’s late mother. In 2003, becoming aware that memories of her mother were fading, the director realized that she only had one short clip of home video recording her mother. She set out to record more. This personal and experimental essay candidly speaks about the difficulty of saying farewell, and shows that the filming process itself is a ritual of mourning and catharsis for the director.
“Once in a dream, I felt that my mother was right there beside me. I woke up crying, staring at the ceiling. I wanted to get back into the dream. If film is the art form that comes closest to dreams, then I want to capture my dreams with my camera.”—Wuna WU
