Hsiao-Wei and A-Chieh are cousins who stick together through thick and thin, having grown up together in a multilingual Hakka military dependents’ village. A-Chieh is hot-tempered and impulsive, while Hsiao-Wei is sullen and quiet. They love running out into the village courtyard during the pouring rain and exploring long alleyways. By chance, they acquire a gun and accidently kill a mafia boss. Pursued by the criminal underworld, they are forced to start a journey on the run.
The Best of Times is a realistic depiction of people from the bottom of the social ladder, illustrating the clashes and imbalances between families and society. The film adopts a fantastical narrative approach and camera angles that shuttle back and forth between old neighborhoods and city landscapes, with a gloomy colour palette that evokes a natural living atmosphere.
