In 1930, the Seediq people living high in Taiwan’s mountains rose up against the oppressive rule of the Japanese government in what became known as the “Wushe Uprising.” Having survived the catastrophe and lost many loved ones, around two hundred remaining Seediq people were exiled from their homeland and forced by the Japanese to migrate to 1 Kawanaka-hara-jima (Qingliu) to live through the aftermath. This documentary begins with 2 Mahung Pawan’s struggles to accept her family's rebellious legacy and further unfolds the memories of other Seediq decedents, leading us back to where the tragedies took place.
Coming in the wake of the historical epic Seediq Bale (2011), Pusu Qhuni is a documentary comprised of literary reviews and dictation from descendants of the Wushe survivors. The lives of surviving members of the resistance against Japanese rule are solemnly and profoundly told. One descendant, Pawan Nawi, takes his two sons to search for Pusu Qhuni, their people’s place of origin. There, they tearfully tell their ancestors of the strife brought upon them by a foreign force, and their hope of true reconciliation one day.
Note :
1.Kawa-naka-zima, the place name during Japanese colonial rule, is today’s Gluban (Qingliu village) in Ren'ai Township, Nantou County. It is home to Taiwan Indigenous ethnic group, the Seediq.
2. Mahung Pawan is the remaining decendent of Mona Rudo, who, as leader of the Mehebu clan, led the rebellion.
