When a dying millionaire offers a large reward in order to find his missing granddaughter, it catches the attention of a wandering singer, Wen. He chances upon a shoe shine boy and a flower-selling girl who both resemble the millionaire’s granddaughter. When two strangers try to abduct the girl for the reward money, they create a slew of troubles turning Wen’s world upside-down. In the turmoil, Wen discovers a hidden truth: the shoe shine boy is actually the missing girl.
This film is the final and only surviving episode of Wen’s stories starring, written by, and with songs performed by WEN Xia, and with precious footage from previous episodes being featured at the beginning of this film. A diverse lineup of music permeates the film, including The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”, Percy SLEDGE’s “When a Man Loves a Woman”, and popular Japanese songs. Anecdotally, WEN Xia was often at the forefront of singing and performing film soundtracks live at screenings with his favorite students the Four sisters. His way of promoting films was later applied by many singer-actors, further opening the door to the golden age of musical films with Taiwanese-dialect songs.
