Ah-Chung is a reckless young man who grew up in a complicated family. His mother separated from his father due to domestic violence, and makes a living performing in a small revue troupe. With no direction in his life after graduating from high school, Ah-Chung is pressured by his mother to join the mysterious temple troupe known as Ba Jia Jiang (Eight Household Generals), in the hope that it might bring good fortune to the family. Instead, Ah-Chung finds himself pulled into the bloody, chaotic and violent world of gang turf wars.
Ah Chung is director CHANG Tso-Chi’s first full-length feature film, which adopted the Taiwanese folk custom Ba Jia Jiang as its main subject matter. To infuse the film with realism and provide an honest depiction of the lives of people in bottom rungs of society, CHANG hired a great number of amateur actors and helped them develop rapport one month before the start of filming, resulting in unpretentious, documentary-like scenes of human interaction.
