Yi-Che, a young man just released from prison, returns to his hometown of Nanfang’ao on the east coast Taiwan, hoping to start a new life with his girlfriend A-Pei. The ghosts of his past, however, refuse to let him go. In the face of feuding gangs and an inner struggle between family and love, how will Yi-Che make peace with his past so he can look to his future?
The people of Lanyu (Orchid Island) in southeast Taiwan believe the dance-like movements of butterflies resemble the rising spirits of the dead. This is why they call butterflies “Babanalidu” — soul of a demon. Soul of a Demon took five years to make, with the production costs exceeding several tens of millions of Taiwanese dollars. The filming locations spanned Lanyu, Nanfang’ao and the unspoiled lands of eastern Taiwan. In contrast to the magical realism of The Best of Times, this is a film that focuses on philosophical reflections of the human condition.
